ANOTHER RED LETTER DAY FOR DOMINIC SAVIO'S

Youngsters during the basketball clinic

26th August 2010 can be marked as another RED LETTER DAY in the annals of St. Dominic Savio Complex. We had the visit of one of the current NBA star players in our midst, in the person of Pau Gasol who was responsible for the triumphant victory of the 'Lakers' in their recent match. The Lakers have been Champions and have retained their trophy for the last two years.

Pau Gasol was here on behalf of the NBA to conduct a basketball clinic for the youngsters of Mumbai on the basketball courts of St. Dominic Savio Club. He took sessions and training and showed the young how to handle the ball and what they should do to be good and effective players.

Before his arrival Troy the representative for the NBA in India had a training session and got the youngsters warmed up by doing routine exercises in handling the ball and some moves. He did get the mood and the spirits of the young going.

But when Pau Gasol stepped in there was a cheer to see this 7.1 footer walk around our basketball court with ease and a pleasant smile on his face. Being a great played and a current NBA top ranking players saw no airs about him and he mingled and went around meeting all the kids that were present for the clinic.

INAUGURATION OF THE HOUSE SYSTEM OF THE PRIMARY SECTION

The 10th July is an auspicious day for the Primary children as they had the inauguration of their House System at 11.30 am in the school hall. Fr. Godfrey D'Souza the Rector, Fr. Crispino D'Souza the Principal and Mrs. Dorothy Dias solemnly walked in with the youngsters clapping and cheering their entry.

The young lads looked smart in their suits marching along as Captain, Vice Captain and leaders and Prefects of various classes with their respective teachers of the various houses.

The ceremony was indeed very impressive for these young lads and they did very well in conducting the Inauguration of the House System. A word of congratulations goes out to the Supervisor and the teachers for training the students.

The Leaders then took the oath and promise to be leaders in their own right and to assist and help in the smooth running and functioning of the school. It was truly magical to see these young lads make their promise. The future of a country is in the hands of these young lads as the saying goes.

A song to give lift up our spirits and call on the Almighty

Fr. Principal was then invited to the stage to say a few words and then declare the House System open for the year 2010-2011. Fr. Crispino encouraged the young leaders to take responsibility and be leaders to the others in their class and primary section.

To wind up the young lads sang the latest song of the 'Waving Flags' with a lot of spirit and zest while waving their coloured flags during the entire song. It gave one the much needed idea of freedom and unity in diversity.

SECONDARY PTA MEETING

On Saturday the 10th July 2010, the Secondary PTA elected members had their first meeting of the year in the school AV Hall at 8.15 am. Fr. Crispino the Principal welcomed the members and then called upon Fr. Godfrey D'Souza the Rector to begin the meeting with a prayer and then say a few words. Fr. Godfrey congratulated those elected to this office and thanked them for their service to the institution.

Fr. Godfrey informed the PTA that much had already been done in the school and this was possible because there was a unity among the PTA members and all worked together to give the best to the children who were coming to St. Dominic Savio's. He also mentioned to them that Don Bosco always wanted his houses and institutions to have a family atmosphere.

Fr. Crispino then told the PTA members about the offices that needed to be held and which offices would be taken by staff members. He gave some direction in the election of the main posts of President, Joint Secretary and Treasurer.

We proceeded to the elections and one name was called out. Dr. Ayesha Sequeira after a while agreed to stand for President. In the meantime Mr. Joseph Dias also said that he was ready to stand for elections. Fr. Crispino then asked the two candidates to say something about themselves before the election began.

The staff and the parents went about with a show of hands. First in order was Dr. Ayesha Sequeira with 19 votes. Mr. Joseph Dias got 15 votes and so Dr. Ayesha was elected as the president and she agreed.

For the post of the Secretary, Mr. Vincent Gonsalves said that he would like to stand for the post and so it was between Mr. Joseph Dias and Mr.. Vincent Gonsalves. Mr. Joseph Dias got the majority and was made the joint Secretary.

For the Treasurer, the members were asked if anyone wanted to be the Treasurer and Mr. Anand M. Fatehpuria agreed. Since there was no one else who volunteered for the post it was given to him unopposed.

Before all dispersed a photograph was taken of the newly elected office bearers.
