CAMP FIRE

On Saturday the 21st January the boarders treated themselvesto a Campfire and had the time of their lives shouting yells, claps, action songsand skits. The heart and soul of the program was Bro. Royston who conducted theevent flawlessly and saw to every detail so that the kids had a great time.

Thank you Bro. Royston for the various programs you haveorganized each Saturday and Sunday for the boarders.

NEW PRIESTS DAY

On Wednesday, 4th January 2012, Fr. Brian Moras the vocation promoter of the Mumbai province accompanied our two young and dynamic new priests, Fr. Rolvin D’Mello & Fr. Osborn Furtado to St. Dominic Savio’s to celebrate New Priests Day.

The Catholic students from the V to the X standards attended their mass in the school chapel. Fr. Rolvin was the main celebrant while Fr. Osborn preached the homily touching on different calls in scripture, starting with some from the Old Testament and coming to the reading of the day, the call of Simon Peter and his brother Andrew.

Fr. Rolvin in his introduction spoke of a kite and the string that is attached to the kite and spoke of how the kite thought that its freedom was being curtailed and wanted to free itself from the string and sore higher.

It so happened that, one day, it broke off from the string and it seemed delighted with this new burst of freedom as it soared and climbed higher, only to realize that the harsh winds tossed it about and it soon shred into pieces bringing it down with a mighty fall.

He concluded that sometimes we do not realize that the Teachers, Elders and parents are the strings that guide and help youngsters soar higher and when youngsters try to break free without first learning the ropes, they come crashing down and disaster strikes.

Fr. Rector thanked Fr. Brian for putting Dominic Savio on the itinerary of the New Priests so that all our youngsters could have an opportunity to listening to these young men who embraced the call to follow Jesus more closely the Don Bosco Way.

After the mass the VIII to the X standard students went to the AV hall to chat with Fr. Rolvin while the younger students remained in the church to listen to the vocation story of Fr. Osborn Furtado.

Thank you Fr. Rolvin and Fr. Osborn and may your ministry in the priesthood be fruitful.

CHRISTMAS PANORAMA 2011

The long awaited ChristmasPanorama organized by St. Dominic Savio High School finally came and peoplecame and saw and participated. The two day event of the school was indeed verybeautifully organized by the Management, Staff, parents and students. On the 18December we began at 4.15 with a hat parade and Carol singing and it then wenton with the students going to the stalls for fun games. In between there weremany programs of competition organized with eminent judges on the panels.

It was a fun filled day andall who came appreciated and thanked the organizers for the well arrangedprograms and stalls.

The second day began on thedot at 4.00 pm with the welcoming of the guests and the Christmas Tableau bythe VII standards beautifully depicting the birth of Jesus. Fr. Rector thenplaced the baby Jesus in the crib and gave a message to one and all present,telling the students, parents and guests that in our search for God let us notlook all over, we will find Him in our hearts and in the hearts of ourneighbour. Having found God in us and one another, we will also find, Peace,Joy and Love.

The Second day had a varietyof competitions and the one looked forward to was the Savio King. The Xstandard students could participate in the Savio King Competition.

Partha Surve was crowned SavioKing while Akash Rai was thr Runner Up.

The second day went on with alot more of people coming in to participate and enjoy themselves with theirfamily and friends.

We thank all our staff,students, parents, past-pupils and benefactors who made this event possible andhelped and assisted in one way or another.

BOARDERS CHRISTMAS PARTY

On the 16th December evening,the boarders had their Christmas Party organized by Bro. Roshan and theSalesian Cooperators. The Party began around 7.30 with a welcome to theSalesians and the Cooperators and all the boys.

Fr. Rector was asked to say a prayerand bring in the celebrations. He welcomed the Cooperators and the boarders tothe Christmas program. After the brief talk by Fr. Rector the DS Boys inHarmony sand a number of Christmas Carols to bring in the Christmas Spirit.Bro. Roshan & teacher Pamela organized a beautiful program filled with fungames and singing and on the spot fancy dress competition.

The boys participated well andwere into each and every game with enthusiasm and zeal.

The Cooperators were all thereto server, support and assist in the Christmas Party. They also gave a sizeablecontribution for the Christmas gifts for the boarders. Mr. & Mrs. Wilfred& Crispina Rebello were invited up as they celebrated twenty-five years asCooperators and were thanked specially for their dedication and commitment.

A sumptuous meal was preparedby Fr. Edwin and his team. The boys did have a wonderful time and ate to theirhearts content.

At the end of the programprizes were distributed to all the winners and the crowning of the event wasSanta with ‘Here comes Santa Claus’ and the giving of gifts to the boys. Theywere all delighted to have a packet for Christmas filled with goodies and otherstuff.

Thanks once again to Fr.Rector, Fr. Crispino, Fr. Edwin, Bro. Roshan, Sir Haydn and to the Cooperatorsfor organizing this beautiful event for the boarders.

CAROLING AT ELDER PHARMACEUTICALS

On the 16th December we had aChristmas program at Elder Pharmaceuticals Ltd. at Andheri West. Fr. BoscoPereira began with the Mass for the CMD and employees of Elder Pharmaceuticalsand the DS Boys in Harmony came into to add to the festive occasion after themass and sang a number of traditional Christmas Carols for all those gatheredaround.

The audience was indeed surprisedand glad that the boys did so well and they applauded well after each Carol.The lads introduced each Carol giving a little history of the same.

After the Carol program, all weregiven snacks and while they were out the Dominic Savio mini band played amedley of Carols for all.

At 7.00 pm on Thursday, the 15 December 2011, Fr.Edwin Colaco organized the Christmas Party for the Evening Study Children inthe school hall. There were about 150 children that came for the party. Bro. Roshantogether with some of the boarders were the main organizers for the fun games,such as, bombing the cities; live electric wires and the like.

Fr. Rector said a few words to thekids and told them that this was a time of Joy and Happiness and that we neededto spread happiness around. Fr. Barnabe also said a couple of words in Hindiinviting them to reach out to one another through goodness and kindness. Aftersome more games for the seniors we had a special artist who came to entertainthe children.

Mr. Raj the mimicry artist made it apoint to come and entertain the children with his mimicry and jokes andimpersonation of actors.

After the program the children went totheir respective classrooms and were greeted by Santa who went around fromclass to class wishing all the students a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.Fr. Edwin had prepared some wonderful gifts for all the kids to take home. Thekids enjoyed themselves and had an excellent time.

CHRISTMAS CAROLING AT MAERSK

Thisafternoon, Thursday the 15th December, we had a great show by the 'DS Boys inHarmony' at Maersk Global Service Centres (INDIA) Pvt. Ltd. at Powai. HaydnDias who works for the company got us to bring in the spirit of the festiveseason by singing traditional Christmas Carols for the employees of Maersk.

The boys too weredelighted as it was a good exposure for them into the company to be able to see and be able to dream for bigger and higher thingsin life. They sang seven Christmas Carols. They were trained by Haydn himselfto sing in harmony and in voices.

The comments by the employees were indeedencouraging and heartwarming.
We would like to thank Mr. Niranjan Kudalkarwho sent us the invitation to sing.

PAST PUPILS VII ALUMNI DAY

ThePast Pupils of St. Dominic Savio High School had their 7th Annual Alumni Day onthe 11th December 2011. It was a gathering of past pupils from all walks oflife who came together in fellowship with family members. Mrs. Iyer was theChief Guest of the evening and was welcomed by Mr. Ketan Gala.

Therewas a well prepared power-point show of the activities and programs conductedin the last year.

Fr. Edwin Colaco theDelegate of the Past Pupils welcomed the Past Pupils and their families to thisAlumni Day and wished them all the best.

Fr. Rector wascalled on to say a few words, and he encouraged the past pupils for all thatthey have been doing in the past and the plans they have for the futureespecially to take care of the marginalized youngsters who need assistance andan education.

The evening waslong and all had a very enjoyable time meeting up with long lost friends andclassmates.

CULTURAL DAY OF STD I

The Standard I class had their Cultural Day on the 10th December 2011 at 3.00 pm. The whole program was short and sweet and the lads were ready for Christmas singing some jingles and Carols to bring in the Christmas Spirit.

The little lads put up a beautiful Christmas skit with a message of Christmas is a time where we need to think of others and do away with injustice and other malpractices.

The little lads rendered their parts so well and did a fantastic job.

They organized their 27th summit on 29th 30th November2011 in New Delhi on Generating Employment. The summit had eminent speakerssuch as Mr. Kapil Sibal, Minister for Communications & IT; Kamal Nath,Minister, for Urban Development, K R Kamath, Chairman P&B Bank; RChandrashekhar, Secretary, Ministry of Communications & InformationTechnology. The need to generate 100 million jobs innovations to employmentgeneration and the FDI policy in achievement this goal was discussed.

The second session saw driversfor Generating Employment; panelists were the Secretaries and Joint Secretariesof the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Ministry of Coal, Department ofInformation Technology, Ministry of Rural Development and Head of ClusterDevelopment Initiative and Limited United India Insurance.

A Conclave on Housing and PovertyAlleviation. At the conclusion of the firstday while releasing a book by Dr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia Deputy Chairman,Planning Commission he and Mr. P Chidambaram Minster for Home affairselucidated Government plans on generating employment.

On the 30th of November 2011, the11th Thinkers and Writers Forum had speakers that were distinguished scholars from privatesector coporate houses and government project partners. Ms. Divya David fromDon Bosco Research Centre. Presented a paper on Gendered Employment Generationand Women Empowerment laying stress on the necessity for adequate skillformation for the marginalized groups. Fr. Barnabe D’Souza presented a paper on SkillFormation among Marginalized Youth drawn from the research of such povertygroups.

Don BoscoBalprafulta in collaboration with St. Dominic Savio High School Andheri & SalamalequeDance Company Germany, organized a week long Dance therapy sessions withchildren from the Night School ,Boarding , Tribal children in Khopoli &Childrens' Home .

Mrs. Heidi Rehse(Director of Salamaleque) said "Salamaleque is known particularly for itshigh artistic standards as well as for its work in the field of Communitydance, working with people in different situations: children and young peopleexcluded from mainstream education, street kids, the displaced, people withdisability, women and men in prisons, marginalized communities or divided bycultural, social or religious circumstances. A dance project is able to givethe opportunity to transform, through the medium of dance and theatre, theirview of themselves, their abilities and their potential. And to change wherenecessary the way in which others view and judge them. Salamaleque is convincedthat dance and specially performance can transform the lives of people andcommunities: supporting and encouraging comprehension, cohesion, sympathy anddialogue. An important aim is to create a basis, on which the work can becontinued and its positive effects established and developed as an importantelement of community life."

An Extensiveworkshop with 100 children from different projects included Children's Yoga,Dance Games, Movement Therapy, Expressive performances & Dance steps. Aspecial performance on violence called Abaatoora was taught to express thefeelings of violence & anger. A hip-hop session & Michael Jackson dancenumbers left the children with joyful experiences. Followed by snacks a generaldiscussion was done with the groups to understand their feelings about danceskills, chosen theme songs, yoga & what interests them the most.

Dance movementtherapy classes will be conducted by trained teachers of Salamaleque in theevenings. Different methodologies & dance techniques will be chosenaccording to the need of the groups. Don Bosco Balprafulta & St. DominicSavio High School's main aim is to help these vulnerable children expressthemselves through various art methods & strengthen academic study &help children pickup skills besides making learning fun.

MANAGEMENT DAY 2011

Wednesday, the 30th November 2011 was indeed an auspicious day as the school celebrated Management Day to felicitate the Management and celebrate their birthdays today.

There was an aura of joy and happiness all around as the students gathered together and got themselves ready for the programme. The entire secondary school assembled on the open stage.

The assembly welcomed the Management as they took their seats. A choir piece welcomed the Management with a beautiful song thanking them for all that they do.

The Compere then welcome the Management to the stage and a few words of appreciation was read by the boys. There was a floral tribute and a gift to each of those present on the stage.

Fr. Godfrey D’Souza, the Rector thanked the Supervisors, the Staff, parents and the students for the felicitation programme. He quotes the words of Helen Keller saying, ‘Alone we can do very little, but together we can do much more.’ He commended the staff for their collaboration and dedication in helping the management to run the school well and thanked them for their hard work in taking Dominic Savio’s to new heights.

As is always a part of the tradition, the younger lads had a prayer dance to call on the Almighty to bless and guide the Management in the role of directing and guiding the institution and the youngsters.

The bigger lads rocked to music and got everyone tapping their feet to a remix.

The ones who stole the show were the tiny tots who came in beautifully dressed outfits depicting people and cultures from all over India and sang…I am Indian just like you. They got a thunderous round of applause from the students and from all those present there.

The DS Rockers had a couple of numbers to wind up the show.

It was indeed a beautiful sunny day and it was over a bit too quick.

K.P. EAST WARD SCIENCE ELOCUTION COMPETITION

On Wednesday, 23rd November 2011, St. Dominic Savio High School, Andheri, hosted the Inter-school Science Elocution Competition, 2011-2012, as an integral part of the annual activity of the K.P. East Ward Science Exhibition. Around 50 schools of different mediums, viz. English, Marathi, Guajarati and Urdu participated in the competition which was held separately for the Juniors, Seniors and the Teachers.

Eminent educationist like Mr. Harprasad Rai, Mr. Ajinder Rai, Mrs Sushila Britto, Mrs. Susan Philips, Mrs. Monalisa Vyas, Mrs. Archana Machado and Mrs. Marilyn Dias were among those who judged this prestigious event.

This much awaited annual event began with the lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries, Rev. Fr. Godfrey D’Souza Rector Dominic Savio, Rev. Fr. Crispino D’Souza, Principal, St. Dominic Savio and Mrs. Vidya, the Supervisor of the Secondary Section, followed by a prayer said by Fr. Rector.

The judges were then formally introduced to the gathering and were given a bouquet of flowers by the Principal as a token of gratitude.

The inaugural event closed with encouraging words to the participants by Rev. Fr. Rector.

The judges and the participants were then escorted to the different venues where individual competitions were held for various sections.

SPORTS FESTIVAL 2011

The St. Dominic Savio Sports Festival was indeed grand and it was conducted for the last two days, 24th & 25th November 2011.

It began with the march in of the Chief guest of the day, Fr. Rector and the march past of the houses. There was the lighting of the torch and the dance display by the boys.

Fr. Rector in his short speech told the boys that Kareem Abdul Jabbar, speaking on Team spirit said, 'In a Team one man may be a special ingredient on the team, but one man is not the team.' He wished the boys that team spirit to work together and win.

All the boys had to participate in about four of the events. There were a variety of games, disciplines and fun games too. It was a delight to see all of them taking an active part in the Sports Festival.

The staff, both the teaching and the non-teaching staff together with the Principal Fr. Crispino did a fantastic job of organizing the whole event to see that every one enjoyed themselves and participated. It was hard work indeed but the outcome was immensely enriching and enjoyable.

The youngsters put in their heart and soul into the two days and were they tired and exhausted???? Bravo lads you were great.

The RED HOUSE were the overall CHAMPIONS Congratulations to one and all.

Don Bosco Balprafulta celebrates the joy of being a child on the20^th of November 2011 which is universally celebrated as WorldChildren’s Day. Don Bosco Balprafulta is an NGO workingwith children in Slums, Missing or Runaway Children on railway stations in thecity of Mumbai through their projects Rihaaee, Talash & Community.Established in April 2000, Don Bosco Balprafulta focuses on enabling children to claimtheir rights and be able to live in a free and protected society.

UniversalChildren's Day takes place on November 20 every year, first proclaimed by theUnited Nations General Assembly in 1959, which was established to bring unityand peace across the nations. It encourages all countries to celebrate this day,to promote mutual understanding about children and initiate action to benefitand promote the welfare of the world's children. The UN Convention of Rights ofa Child is a humanrights treaty settingout the civil, political, economic, social, health and cultural rights of children.

WorldChildren’s Day was celebrated at St. Dominic Savio High school in Andheri. 800 children from 20 NGOs, SlumCommunities, CBOs, & streets. The event comprised group workactivities in 30 classes which included slogans, songs, games, quizzes, &creative artwork on child rights from 9am to 1pm .The Main stage event includeddances, street plays, Nickelodeon artist performance & a Special children’sRock band who performed on Sadda Haq depicting the meseage of a right of everychild. The Event was supported By Disney, Nickelodeon, Provogue, Polycab,Benefactors, Bisleri, Godrej, Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM. 100 Volunteers fromdifferent Colleges like SNDT, St. Xaviers, St Dominic Savio High school andHoly Spirit Hospital.

Today Wednesday, the 16th November 2011, theGreen House had its turn for the School Assembly.and had as its theme: Reasonand self-belief.

The House teachers, Miss Valerie and Miss Renilda trained theboys well and they placed before all the students the example of GeneralMichael Magone a student of Don Bosco who seemed restless until he met DonBosco and shared his difficulties and problems. The programme was filled withsong and dance that brought out the theme well.

Fr. Rector in his talk to thestudents shared with them the story of a young lad Julio who had a desire to bea great footballer and goalkeeper for 'Real Madrid.' He was selected as agoalkeeper for the team and one evening in 1963 he went out with his friends toparty and met with an accident at 20. He had to give up his dream. He did notget discouraged, though he was very sad and depressed. He took to writing poemsand song and when he entered the first singing competition he won the firstprize. The song he sand was 'Life goes on the same.' A footballer turned singerwho became one of the ten greatest singers and sold 300 million copies of hisalbum: Him name is Julio Iglesias.

CHILDRENS DAY 2011

Miss Valerie Mascarenhas the MC for the the Childrens Day programme was indeed fantastic getting the children and students to enjoy every moment of the programme.

The Secondary Teachers put up a beautiful song with a theme and vision helping the students to make right choices and good decisions.

The Pre-Primary staff also sang a song for the students and the Primary danced to Senorita adding flare and beauty with their steps and dress. Mr. Rajkumar one of the parents, a TV personality and a mimicry artist gave a side splitting show with his mimicry and had the students and staff holding their sides with laughter.

It was a day to remember and Fr. Rector at the concluding words asked the youngsters to thank their parents for giving them their childhood as many children miss out on being children as they are caught up in child labour, child abuse and do not know the beauty and benefit of being children.

ALTAR SERVERS RALLY

The Catholic students of the school participated in the AltarServers Rally held at Don Bosco Matunga on the 9^th November 2011.There were 25 of our youngsters who went from the school. The programme was forthe entire day and filled with action songs, praise and worship, the Eucharist,fun games, discussions and the like. There were youngsters from variousparishes and institutions of Don Bosco and also a number of Diocesan parisheswere invited for the programme.

Our three coordinators that went from our school were Bro.Roshan Gonsalves, Teachers Pamela Dias and Swapna Fernandes.

Our youngsters did very well in the skit and it was verydifferent from what the others put up. It was well appreciated by one and all.

The theme of the Altar Servers Rally was Rooted in Christ.

Thank you Fr. Brian & Fr. Glenn for organizing thisprogramme of animation for our catholic youngsters.

Jubilee of Salesians

On Monday 31st October 2011 the Province celebrated the Jubilees of eight Salesians.

Fr. Tony D'Souza who was a former Provincial was celebrating his Golden Jubilee of Profession as a Salesian.

Frs. Alexander Fernandes, Dominic Lisboa and Nelson Falcao celebrated the Silver Jubilee of their Ordination.

Frs. Blany Pinto, Edison Fernandes, Edwin Colaco and Ignas Macwan celebrated the Silver Jubilee of their Profession as Salesians.

The Celebrations began with the Holy Eucharist in the Shrine of Don Bosco's Madonna in Matunga. Fr. Tony the senior Jubilarian was the main celebrant.

After the Eucharist there were family photographs being taken before the gathering came together for the reception.

It was a day of appreciation and joy for all that these Salesians were to the Province and to their communities and to the people they ministered to in their years of dedication as Salesians and priests.

Each of the Jubilarians received a citation from the Provincial in thanks, appreciation and gratitude.

All of them were with their families and loved ones who stood with them all these years as Salesians.

We thank and appreciate them for their work, toil and labour in the ministry and as Salesians in their communities and wish them the very best as they continue to carry the flag of Don Bosco to many more people and youngsters.

PROVINCIAL VISITATION

PROVINCIAL VISITATIONAT ST. DOMINIC SAVIO ED. COMPLEX-ANDHERI 18 OCTOBER 2011

The Provincial was scheduled tomake his official visit to the community of St. Dominic Savio on the 18^thOctober 2011. He however came in the previous evening at 6.00 pm and began withan introductory conference to the Salesians at 7.15 pm.

The confreres gathered togetherat prayer at 6.10 am and had some sharing to do. At 6.45 am we have thecelebration of the Eucharist by Fr. Provincial. It is the feast of St. Luke theEvangelist and Fr. Provincial spoke of us being missionaries and being bearersof the ‘Good News’ to others.

After breakfast he startedmeeting the Salesians. At 10.45 am after the students had finished theirpapers, we had an assembly of the students, staff and the Salesians where heshared his thoughts on not to give up but rather strive to always try andsucceed.

After the school assembly he metwith the school staff at 11.15 am and shared with them some qualities of beinga good and effective teacher.

In the afternoon at 2.15 pm Fr.Provincial met with some of the staff of Prafulta and Fr. Godfrey D’Sa theDirector of Prafulta welcomed and introduced Fr. Provincial to his staff. Therewas quite some sharing of information on all that is happening in the varioussectors of Prafulta. Fr. Provincial proposed a new opening in Nasik for theservices of Prafulta and asked if they could look into the possibility ofstarting something in Nashik.

At 3.00 pm Fr. Provincial met theDon Bosco Balprafulta staff and interacted with them. Fr. Barnabe the Directorof DB Balprafulta introduced Fr. Provincial to his staff and some of the staffnarrated what was happening in the different areas and some of the new ideasthat was being implemented.

In the evening Fr. Provincial metwith the Cooperators at 6.00 pm. About 30 were present. The Cooperatorspresented Fr. Provincial with a bouquet of flowers and gave him an idea of theworks that were done in the past year. Fr. Provincial encouraged theCooperators for their enthusiasm and zeal and asked them to get a younger crowdinto the group so that the unit flourishes. He thanked the Cooperators for allthat they have been doing for the Unit and for their active participation.

At 6.30 pm the Past Pupils met asa group. As it was a working day there were not too many but a decent groupcame for the meeting. Mr. Ketan Gala welcomed Fr. Provincial and asked Fr.Edwin Colaco the Delegate to say a few words and officially welcome Fr.Provincial. Fr. Provincial thanked the past pupils for their help and supportin the various programmes and activities and especially for reaching out to themarginalized and deserving youngsters.

At. 7.00 pm the children of theEvening Study Classes were assembled together in the school hall and werewaiting to welcome and greet Fr. Provincial. They welcomed him in song anddance and read out an address in English and in Hindi. They thanked theprovincial for all that is happening for them at the ESC and were all praisefor the work that Fr. Edwin is doing for them in helping them to do better intheir studies as well as in their computer classes.

At. 7.30 pm Fr. Provincial metwith the confreres of the house to conclude his conference and his Visitation.He ended with a prayer and then shared his thoughts with the community abouthis visitation.

He thanked the community for allthat they are doing for the young and the marginalized in the variousactivities and programmes that are conducted in the campus and commended thecommunity for its spirit of unity and collaboration with each other.

Fr. Provincial would rest thenight with us and leave for Borivali the next morning to continue his rounds ofthe various houses in the province.

Over a decade of working with children in community and on Railway Stations for their rights, Domnic Savio and Don Bosco Balprafulta recognized a need to work at a family level with Parents.

Effective Parenting has become one of the major concerns, it could serve as one of the best strategies to reduce incidents of exploitation of children in all forms and to prevent the child from stepping out of home and on to the streets.

As a part of our ‘Effective Parenting’ program, Don Bosco Balprafulta along with Domnisc Savio organized a Parents meeting on Sunday, October 16, 2011.

Parents of children who have been repatriated back to their families from child labour situations, from the streets/railway stations - directly home placed or repatriated from the Juvenile homes (Dongri, Mankurd), as also parents of children with whom we work as a part of our Community Intervention to prevent drop outs were invited for this meeting.

A total of 51 parents from different parts of Mumbai’s urban slum (Govandi, Mankurd, Mahim, Sion, Dharavi and Andheri) came for this meeting.

The primary objective for organizing the meeting was to understand the problems of parents while bringing up the children and to make parents aware of children’s issues.

Parents were divided into groups to discuss various parenting issues with a help of case studies. Some of the issues discussed were on building a foundation for the children. Insisting on them going to school and not to earn. Parents taking more trouble to ensure they spend more time with their children, listening to them, relating with love, having the neighbours care for them when away at work. In short, the Parents realized that the furutre generation is in their hands, if they give them a firm foundation become effective parents they will be able to break the cycle of deprivation their past generations have been going through, with their children.
The Director in concluding focused on making parents realize that they have the responsibility as well as the capability to give their children a bright future. He also stressed on breaking the cycle of poverty, illiteracy with the help of education, skill building and awareness.

Fr.Edwin Colaco welcomed the parents with his usual charm and charisma which set the tone for the entire meeting. Thanks to the community of Domnic Savio (Andheri) for its co-rodinated support and enthusiasm for ensuring that the parents went with greater zest to be more effective mentors of their children

CULTURAL DAY STANDARD II

The students of the II Standard had their Cultural Day on Saturday, 24 September 2011. They had for their theme "Respect and Accept Me" Through song and dance they put forth their message of Respect and Acceptance.

The little comperes did a fantastic job and the students were a marvel performing so well and doing their part beautifully. Congrats and thanks to the Class Teachers together with the numerous parents who collaborated and helped in making this Cultural Day a Success and a memorable one.

Fr. Rector in his speech told the parents that Good habits are caught not taught and are the parents to show respect and acceptance to one another and to other people so that their own children can emulate their behaviour and learn from them. Each one of us however menial our job or work is, needs to be respected and accepted and it is we elders who can show our young this way or respect and love for all human beings.

The VIII A students had their School Assembly on Wednesday, 21 September 2001 and the theme was Discover your talents. The youngsters through skit and song told the students in no uncertain terms that Education is important and one must strive to be educated.

However, each of us has been endowed with a special talent and we need to work on this God given talent and see that we enhance our talents. Each of us is differently talented and we need to cultivate and work to improve on our talents. Some are musicians, others, are sports men and women, some are artists etc.

We thank God for these talents that he has given us and we strive to make this world a better place. The dance and songs that the students put up did indeed show the talents of the youngsters and it was wonderful to see them perform. At the end of the program Fr. Rector gave away some prizes to the students who had won prizes.

YELLOW HOUSE ASSEMBLY

This morning, Wednesday 7th September 2011, was the day of the Yellow House, who has as its Patron Blessed Phillip Rinaldi, the third successor of St. John Bosco. The theme of the assembly was 'Serenity in Prayer' and a number of incidents in the life of Don Bosco were enacted to show how Don Bosco had a great trust in Divine Providence even in very dire moments. He always asked his boys to pray and he was confident that God would answer his prayers and God did.

He inculcated in his boys to build on a relationship with God as God was not there to spoil their plans but to help them fulfill and give them life to the fullest.

Fr. Rector, in his talk told the boys that Don Bosco based his Educational Methodology on three pillars: Reason, Religion and Loving Kindness. Religion was not to be the following of rituals but building a RELATIONSHIP with God as we have with friends and loved ones. As human beings we need relationships and we build and grow in relationships. We need to have a strong and good relationship with God too, and when we have that we have, like Don Bosco, nothing to fear as God will be with us at all times.

After the Rectors speech some of the prizes for the week were distributed to the students who won them.

PRE PRIMARY-TEACHERS DAY CELEBRATIONS

This morning, the 6th September 2011, the Pre Primary tiny tots had their Teachers Day Celebrations in their class room. It was so lovely to see them dressed up to cheer their teachers and express their gratitude. The little things they did and said was indeed wonderful and every teacher in the Kindergarten had a smile and a tear. Thank you little sweethearts God bless you. Thank you parents for helping out and being there with them.

EVENING STUDY CLASSES-TEACHERS DAY

The Teachers Day Celebrations went on till late evening. The last of the celebrations were by the Evening Study Classes Children who felicitated their teachers with song, dance and expressive words of thanks and appreciation. On a regular basis we have 250 children and youngsters enrolled from our neighbourhood and from the bastis. They come in every day for tuition beginning with some recreation from 5 to 6 pm and then to study till 8.30 pm. There are seven teachers who are with them and help them in their daily studies. In the past couple of years those who appeared for the SSLC examinations did very well and most secured over 80% with some securing even above 90%. Thank you dear Teachers for helping out these youngsters.

At the end of the programme Fr. Edwin who is in charge of the Evening Study programme said a few words of appreciation to the teachers and asked the children to say something nice about each of the teachers. Some of them in their own simple way expressed their appreciation for the time given by these teachers.

At the end of the programme the children went to their classrooms and some sweets were distributed to all.

TEACHERS DAY-BY THE BOARDERS

On the 5th September 2011 at 6.00 pm the Boarders had an evening with the Teachers who spend a lot of time with them coaching them in Maths, Hindi, Music, choir etc. They put up a number of items to express their love and gratitude and thanks for the precious time spent. An address of thanks and appreciation was read out by Master Leon D'Souza and Mr. Haydn Dias said the vote of thanks on behalf of the teachers. The last item on the programme was the DS Rockers who sang a couple of pop songs and ended with 21 Guns. It was indeed an exciting evening.

TEACHERS DAY-SECONDARY SECTION

ON the 5th September 2011 the Teachers Day Celebrations of the Secondary Section began in the morning with the class teachers and a subject teacher going to class. The students gave a short programme for the teachers and thanked them for their valuable time and energy they spend for the students. Many of the classes prepared a beautiful power-point and expressed their appreciation and gratitude.

After the programme in the classes, there was mass for the catholic students and all the other students went to the A.V. Hall for a prayer service.

At about 10.45 am the students assembled in the School hall for the Teachers' programme. The students put in a lot of effort to get themselves organized and planned for many weeks. There were some dances and songs that were put up that expressed the care and concern of the teachers. The school Captain read an address to the teachers. PRIMARY SCHOOL - TEACHERS DAY

The Primary students had their Teachers' Day celebrations at 8.15 am on the 5th September 2011. They gave a rousing applause at the beginning to welcome the dignitaries.

The programme was well planned and credit goes to the Supervisor who got the help of a number of parents and involved them in preparing the programme for the teachers.

Once again thanks to all the parents who were very involved in making this Teachers' Day a grand success for the Primary Kids. Thanks to Mr. Titus Remedios the President of the Primary PTA for compering the show. God bless you all and all our wonderful Teachers. Our kids did a fantastic job in appreciating and thanking their teachers.

The teachers were indeed very delighted with the programme and for all the wishes and cards and love they received from their students. It was a day of appreciation and thanks and they deserved it for all the hard work they put in for the sake of the kids.

IX A ASSEMBLY

The IX A students had their Assembly Day on Monday the 29th August 2011. The theme for the same was Rays of Hope. They had a little skit on the life of Don Bosco meeting Bartholomew Garelli who came to the sacristy to serve mass and was chased away by the sacristan as he did not know how to serve mass. Don Bosco called for Garelli and began his mission with Garelli for boys. He began with a small prayer. Thus giving hope and sunshine to millions of youngsters.

PRE PRIMARY ELOCUTION

On the 29th August the children of the Pre Primary had their elocution day and it was indeed wonderful to see the little orators and poets come up and deliver their poems and speeches. We need to congratulate and thank the teachers who trained these kiddos to have the courage to come up and speak to a packed hall. Bravo little ones, you did great.

CULTURAL DAY-IV STANDARD PRIMARY

The IV standard of the Primary Section had its Cultural Day this afternoon at 3.00 P.M. in the School A.V. Hall. The theme for the day was ‘Let’s Celebrate the Don Bosco Way’. The students put up a number of items that were well prepared and done with grace and style.

They welcomed the parents with a Welcome song and got them into the mood for the afternoon. After the initial introductions the Principal, Fr. Crispino D’Souza was invited to the stage to say a few words and he welcomed the parents of the boys and thanked them for their collaboration in helping give this holistic education to the young.

The dance that was put up by the boys was well choreographed by some parents who together with others spent time to teach and get the boys ready. Thank you my dear parents and volunteers.

The skit that was enacted in a Five Act Play depicted a young lad who kept saying that he was hungry, hungry, hungry. He was misunderstood all the time and people looked at him differently. None reached out to feed and satisfy his hunger but gave many an explanation to the word ‘Hunger.’ The last Act had Don Bosco come in and he understood the lad and gave him something to eat and in this way Don Bosco reached out to numerous youngsters of his time and still do so through his Salesians all over the world.

Fr. Rector touched on the lines that were said during the program, lines that Don Bosco said to his boys, ‘For you I study, for you I work, for you I give him life.’ Fr. Rector told the parents that those words were not just words of Don Bosco but that it was very much the words of each parent present for their own child. Which parent would not give his or her life for her son or daughter?

Fr. Rector then spoke of the hunger that was repeated by the lad in the skit. He drew a lesson from that and said that children have many types of hunger. What do we do when our child says I am hungry? Do I as a parent send him out for some junk food? Are we stuffing our children with not just junk food but a lot of unnecessary stuff?

He concluded and said that the most important hunger that needs to be constantly taken care of is the child’s hunger for LOVE. He encouraged the parents to love their children and give not just commodities and the like but more time and energy so that children bond in a greater way with parents and will one day appreciate all the time spent together as they grow into mature human beings.

The boys ended with the song ‘Let’s Celebrate Don Bosco.’

Mrs. Valerie Mascarenhas came forward at the end of the program on behalf of the parents to say a word of thanks to all the organizers and volunteers, teachers and the management for encouraging these Cultural days that help and benefit the youngsters.

The grand finale was the kids coming on stage together in their various costumes with their smiling faces.

ELOCUTION COMPETITION-SECONDARY

GREEN GANESHA WORKSHOP AT ST. DOMINIC SAVIO HIGH SCHOOL-ANDHERI

On Thursday, 25th August 2011, Greenline organized a ‘Green Ganesha workshop, conducted by the Young Environmentalists Programme Trust.

They programme was hosed by St. Dominic Savio High School and a total of 230 students participated in it. The participating schools were: St. Dominic Savio, Andheri; Holy Family, Andheri and Don Bosco Borivili.

The purpose of the sessions was to educate children about the ways of celebrating festivals like Ganesh Chaturti in an eco-friendly manner. The idea behind the workshop is that by using clay, vegetable based decorations and home immersions, the festival can be enjoyed in the traditional manner without damaging the environment.

The session included a practical exercise in making Ganesh idols of clay, as well as inputs on safe immersions.

It is hoped that the students will take the lessons learned at this workshop to their homes and communities and spread the message of eco-friendly celebrations in their families and the neighbourhood.

We would like to thank Fr. Savio Silveira from the Don Bosco Development Society and his team for making it possible to have this workshop with the help and assistance of Young Environmentalists Programme Trust.

SPECIAL EDUCATION by Blossom Bhandarkar

Mrs. Blossom Bhandarkar, the elder sister of Fr. Crispino D’Souza, took a very interesting session for our teachers from the first to the seventh standards on how to take care of that 20% of children who do not and cannot reach that level of grasping, understanding and comprehending simple lessons in class. Miss. Maria Xavier, the Primary Supervisor introduced Mrs. Blossom at the beginning of the session.

A Special Educator herself, she gave us an insight into how we need to look at children and treat them equally, giving special attention to the weaker ones who find it hard to understand anything.

She took us through helping kids understand what concepts are, having a pre-test and then a post test to check out their levels of understanding and how much they managed to understand after the post test.

Some practical hands on exercises were done to see how far we could go to simplify lessons to make it easier for students to learn.

She also gave us a couple of web sites for easy references to help us in preparing worksheets for the students.

Miss Valerie gave the vote of thanks at the end of the session.

On Friday the 19th August 2011, Parsi New Year, the boarders together with Fr. Rector, Fr. Crispino and Bro. Roshan went for a picnic to Bosco Wadi, Uttan. It was a bright day and the boys had great fun in the pool as well as in the sea.

It was a wonderful time to relax, enjoy and be oneself - 'Expression' that Don Bosco always wanted from his boys. They had so much fun and laughter and food that they were sad that it came to an end so fast.

MARATHI ELOCUTION COMPETITION WINNER

The Primary School had their English Poetry Elocution Competition this morning. The group were divided in two: The I & II standards and the III & IV standards. The judges for the I & II standards were Mrs. Dorothy Dias & Mrs. Aniaka Katrak while the judges for the III & IV standards were Mrs. Fatima Barretto and Mr. Lasil Bias.

We congratulate all who participated in the Competition and look forward to the announcement of the winners.

The students of St. Dominic SavioAndheri were waiting for this moment, to get a chance to visit and be with DonBosco. The students assembled early in the morning and were ready to have anearly start to meet this great saint of the young. The students of the eighthto the tenth of the school and the boarders went for this pilgrimage.

It was a dream come true, havingDon Bosco in our midst, and the young with Don Bosco. This is what happenedthis morning at Don Bosco Matunga. All the youngsters from Don BoscoInstitutions and the Salesian Sister Institutions were invited to be with DonBosco and pay respect to his relic. Every Don Bosco Institution was representedfrom Andheri to Wadala to Nerul and even the ITI & HMTC of DB Kurla came inlarge numbers.

As the schools flowed in, theyfirst went into the church to see the relic of Don Bosco and pay respect to himand then they went around looking at the Salesian Exhibition around the area.

The school quadrangle was filledto capacity with school children. When it was time for the Eucharisticcelebration, there was a procession with the casket of Don Bosco, the littleangles and the concelebrants and the celebrant, There were about thirty priestspresent to bid adieu to Don Bosco who touched the lives of so many faithful andyoungsters even today. It was indeed a fitting farewell to a great Friend ofthe Youth.

Fr. Michael Fernandes theprovincial touched on some of the defects of Don Bosco and said that he didhave some things that were not right and Don Bosco had to work hard to correcthimself. He was willing to go through any amount of change for the sake of hismission and for the love of his boys.

The Mumbai Police band had anumber of pieces to keep the mood and they even played a couple of hymns of DonBosco. We thank them for being there with us to honour Don Bosco.

Fr. Michael Fernandes handed therelic of Don Bosco to Fr. Joaquim Fernandes who is from the Konkan Province andwould be accompanying the relic to the Province of the Konkan from Mumbai. Itwas a sad farewell to Don Bosco by the multitudes that were present each onetrying to get a last glimpse of this wonderful friendly saint.

INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS 2011

It was indeed a beautiful day tobegin with, bright sunshine to bring out the beauty of the day and a lovelyprogram presented by the students giving us a glimpse of ‘India Shining throughits struggles and problems.’

The speech in Hindi by PartheSurve our School Captain was indeed excellent and beautifully rendered withouta flaw. The cultural dance by our youngsters was inspiring and very colourfulmaking us realize that we are so richly endowed with culture.

Fr. Rector spoke about the Pledgethat is recited every morning, ‘India is my Country’ and asked that it not justbe a routine and habit without knowing and understanding its meaning andsignificance.

He spoke of the variety ofpeople, languages, cultures that we are and yet at the same time each unique inone’s own way. He gave us the example of threads of different colours andmentioned that each of us is like a strand of thread, we have ourindividuality. He then showed a carpet and asked the students if they like whatthey saw and all said yes, it was very beautiful. He then drew out a lessonfrom the carpet and said that the carpet was made up of different colours ofthread woven together, and in doing so we have this beautiful work of tapestry.As Indians we have a rich variety and beauty and we need to look at the biggerpicture to enjoy the tapestry. Our beauty comes out in our ‘Unity inDiversity.’

The parents of our ex-studentMaster Luv Shinde our SSLC topper with 96% in the last examinations were theGuest of Honour and a certificate of Honour was presented to Master Luv Sindeand a certificate of Merit to all those who secured 80% and above. The meritholders had come with their parents/guardians to be felicitated. Mrs. Shindeand Master Luv gave a short but apt speech telling the present bath that whatmatters to achieve success is effort, determination and consistency.

May this 64 Independence Day thatwe celebrate be an inspiration to us to be able to love our country andmotherland and work harder to eradicate corruption, hatred, division and otherevils that exist in our society and country.

After the school program, therewas tea for all the guests after which the teachers were invited to see a movieentitled, ‘Front of the Class’ a movie to understand students and theirdifficulties. The teachers enjoyed the said that it touched them.

THE SALESIAN FAMILY WITH DON BOSCO

The Salesian Family had an hour with Don Bosco on Sunday, 14th August 2011 in the Shrine of Don Bosco's Madonna, Matunga, Mumbai from 3.00 pm to 4.00. pm. Fr. Wilfred D'Souza the Delegate for the Salesian Family was present and began with a prayer service after which there was time for the various groups of the Salesian Family to express 'What Don Bosco meant to each one.' A number of individuals from the Salesian Family and from our Andheri Unit of Cooperators and Past Pupils came forward to express their love, gratitude and commitment to Don Bosco. Many of them had very touching stories to narrate.

They were all thrilled to have this special time with Don Bosco and in his midst. Don Bosco surely reached out to each and every one who was present t bless and extend his loving care to one and all present as he did when he was alive and surrounded by his boys.

It was truly a moment of reunion with our Father and Teacher of the young, a promise that Don Bosco kept, to come and be with us and in our midst.

This has truly been a privilege for us members of the Salesian Family and a memorable event in our lives and in the history of the Salesian Family here in Mumbai. Some members of our unit of the Salesian Family giving their testimony about how Don Bosco touched the lives of them and their families.

After the short but sweet program in the church we had mass at 4.30 pm for the Salesian Family.

MARIAN NITE AT DOMINIC SAVIO'S

As per the traditions of theSalesians and a Salesian Institution, St. Dominic Savio Boys’ Home had itsMarian Nite on Saturday, 13^th August 2011. Bro. Roshan Gonsalvesconducted the service beautifully. The boarders were grouped into eight teamsand all of them came prepared for the event. They had quizzes on our Lady,competitions, skits, songs, puzzles, decoding Marian messages and otherinteresting and gripping games.

All of them were veryenthusiastic participants and enjoyed themselves. Fr. Crispino D’Souza declaredthe Marian Nite open; Fr. Godfrey D’Souza the Rector said a few words to bringin the Marian Nite and to conclude the Marian Month.

The highlight of the program wasFr. Salu D’Souza our senior most confrere of the Mumbai Province singing aMarian song for the boys. He does have a beautiful voice. The boys loved himsinging.

Fr. Bosco Pereira declared thewinners at the end of the night: Team Vellankani and the Fr. Salu was invitedto knight the Captain with a crown and a sword.

It was indeed a fitting tributeto the Lovely Lady dressed in Blue whom we honoured the entire month from the15^th July.

May she continue to guide andprotect each one of our boys, their families and loved ones.

THE DB WAY

The entire staff of St. DominicSavio’s Andheri was present this morning for a whole day’s program on the ‘DonBosco Way’. For our resource person we had Dr. Fr. Peter Gonsalves sdb who hascompiled a book entitled DB Way, highlighting the Educational Method of St.John Bosco, The Preventive System! Fr. Crispino the Principal introduced Dr.Gonsalves to the entire staff before the sessions began.

Dr. Fr. Peter Gonsalves ispresently in the province of his origin going around the schools of the provinceenlightening the teachers on the system of Don Bosco. It was indeed a beautifulday with very interactive sessions and discussions on the methods that werepresent since ancient times, the Repressive system. He said that this method isstill used in many places.

Dr. Peter Gonsalves spoke aboutthe System of Don Bosco which is a combination of the Preventive and theExpressive systems. Don Bosco had a blend of these systems getting the young tolive life fully and be able to express themselves without any fear, force orintimidation.

The discussions of the teacherswere very lively and full of examples of how at times the repressive system hasbeen used at various times in their own lives. How the preventive system is amuch better and needed method for today’s society.

They did also express theirdifficulties in using these methods of prevention and expressions in bigclassrooms of 60 and over students. However all were in agreement that the bestmethod would be the combination of the Preventive and the Expressive methods.

Dr. Gonsalves used a number ofclippings from the movie ‘Taare zameen par’ and ‘Stanley ka dabba’ drawinglessons from some teachers who used the preventive system of education.

Ms. Arlene at the end of the daygave the vote of thanks in appreciation for the time and lessons taught to usduring the entire day.

All that is now left is for us aseducators to put into practice this beautiful Educational Method of St. JohnBosco, called the Preventive System.

May we allow the children to beable to Express themselves and live life fully.

The Secondary School had its BLUEHOUSE DAY this morning and the theme for the same was Service and Sacrifice.The students of the Blue House did a marvelous job and we congratulate

theteachers for scripting it so well.

They brought out the life oftheir patron, Blessed Artemide Zatti, a Salesian Brother who was enarmoured bythe teachings and philosophy of Don Bosco. He gave his life in service to hisfellow Salesians and people. He was a trained nurse and ran and built a hospital.

The students also depicted ascene from the life of Don Bosco during the cholera plague in Valdocca, Italy.Don Bosco did not hesitate to send his lads out to help the sick and the dying,assuring them that nothing would happen to them if they had faith and a deeptrust in our Lady. Not one of his boys died of cholera.

The words of Mahatma Gandhi ringout so clearly, “The best way to find your self is to lose yourself in theservice of others."

Fr. Rector also quoted a very aptsaying that goes like this: “Service to others is the rent we pay for our stayhere on earth.

”

The boarders had their Marian NiteFete with FUN Games. Bro. Roshan Gonsalves organized the same with the help ofthe senior boarders. It was fun to see the joy, enthusiasm and excitement onthe boarders as they tried to win as much as they could by participating inabout twenty Fun games. Those who did not win had a disappointed look on theirfaces while the winners had a smile from east to west with a push to win more.Thanks Bro. Blessed Michael Rua was born on 9th

June1837, the last of the nine children

was the first successor of “St John

Bosco.” He was the first among the

few with whom Don Bosco shared the

Idea of forming the salesian society, he

was Don Bosco’s closest collaborator

in the development of the

congregation and was the co-founder

and first rector major of the salesians.

Don Bosco once told him “We two

will go halves in everything”

Michael Rua’s own plan and action of

life was drawn through fidelity to

Don Bosco. He made the spring into

a stream and a stream into a river.

COMPERE 2: The Salesian family had its origin in

Don Bosco and its continuity in Michael Rua,

He made the example of Don Bosco into

a school, his rule into a spirit and his

holiness into a model.

Nicknamed ‘The living rule” because of

his severe loyalty, we draw inspiration

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS OF FR. BOSCO

On Saturday, 30th July 2011 the Salesian Community together with the boys celebrated the birthday of Fr. Bosco Pereira. The Salesian community had the Holy Eucharist together and prayed for Fr. Bosco that the Lord may continue to give him good health that he may be able to carry on his ministry at St. Dominic Savio’s as well as Don Bosco Institute of Technology, Kurla.

During the day Fr. Bosco had many guests and friends who came by to wish and greet him.In the evening the boarders together with Fr. Crispino and Bro. Roshan prepared a short but sweet ‘Family Circle’ in typical Salesian style to express their joy and gratitude through an address, song and dance.The juniors put up a dance and were looking very colourful and swayed to the beat of the music.

Haydn got his group DS boys in Harmony to sing two beautiful numbers for Fr. Bosco.There was the cutting of the cake and speeches by Fr. Rector, Fr. Bosco and finally Fr. Crispino thanking one and all.

The boys had a sumptuous meal and the Community had a meal together with a number of Salesians coming from communities around Mumbai to celebrate the gift of life that was given to Fr. Bosco.We had many sweet memories to go to bed with. God bless!
